Retaining Walls in the Chicagoland Area

A retaining wall does a structural job and a visual one at the same time: it holds back soil that wants to move, and it turns an awkward slope into usable, level yard. We build walls to take out a grade change, terrace a sloped lot, raise a planting bed, or give a patio a finished edge that doubles as seating.

Height, soil and what is above and below the wall all change how it has to be built, so this is one to look at in person. The estimate is free and it is the fastest way to find out what your slope actually needs.

What we cover

Retaining Walls We Take On

  • Grade-change and terracing walls
  • Raised beds and planter walls
  • Seat walls around patios and fire-pit areas
  • Steps integrated into a wall
  • Drainage behind the wall
  • Repair or replacement of failing walls

What makes the difference

  • Drain it or it moves

Drainage stone and a path for water to escape behind the wall are what keep hydrostatic pressure from doing the damage.

  • Base course sets everything

Every course above follows the first. Time spent getting the base level and compacted is never wasted.

  • Height changes the engineering

Taller walls carry much greater load, and may need stepping, terracing or a permit. We will tell you which applies to yours.

Serving the greater Chicagoland area

A wall is a drainage project first

Nearly every retaining wall that leans, bulges or fails did so because water got behind it and had nowhere to go. Saturated soil is dramatically heavier than dry soil, and when that load freezes it pushes harder still. The gravel, the drain and the backfill behind a wall are not optional extras — they are the parts doing the work.

The other half is the base. A wall built on a proper compacted footing stays in line; one set on loose soil starts moving the first spring. Both are decided before the first block or form goes in, which is why we would rather see the site than quote a wall over the phone.
